The essay contest was open to any youth 18 years of age and under to inspire youths to perform good deeds and submit an essay about what they have accomplished.
This time, the winning essay went to 17-year-old Jacqueline Taggart, who was awarded the grand prize – a brand new laptop.
Taggart, from South Amboy, was asked by her former history teacher to do volunteer work at the Elk Lodge. She served dinner to the veterans while keeping the veterans company. At the end of the night she said, “I wanted to do something without expecting a return, yet I did get something back, the satisfaction of knowing I made someone happy by simply being there, helping and talking to people who helped protect our country.”
South Amboy mayor Fred Henry was present for the prize-giving.
